Update our laws.

Upgrade our defences.

Upskill our workforce.

The CyberUp Campaign is leading the push for cyber security legislation that is fit for the challenges and threats of the 21st century through our efforts to reform the UK’s Computer Misuse Act 1990.

Having made  the case for reform in Parliament and the media since 2019,  we secured a comprehensive Home Office review of the legislation in 2021, the first in the Act’s 32 years’ history.

With the UK on the precipice of a historic change in our cyber crime laws, we need your help to make sure this once-in-a-generation opportunity does not go to waste.

It’s time to CyberUp.

The Computer Misuse Act (CMA) is the foundational law that governs cybercrime in the UK - yet it is more than 32 years old. The UK cyber security industry works to safeguard the resilience of the UK and its allies against increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks and threat actors. But the Act in its current form prevents and criminalises a large proportion of vulnerability and cyber threat intelligence research that UK cyber security professionals are capable of carrying out. This makes us all less safe.

The CyberUp Campaign is the leading campaign pushing for reform of the UK’s outdated Computer Misuse Act, to update and upgrade cyber crime legislation to protect our national resilience and promote international competitiveness. The campaign brings together a broad coalition of supporters across the UK cyber security sector and in Parliament. In May 2021, the Campaign welcomed the Home Secretary’s announcement of a review of the CMA and was delighted to respond to this consultation. However more than a year on, we continue to wait for the consultation findings to be published.

Following the Home Office’s continued review process, the Campaign is calling on Government to seize the opportunity to lay out a clear timeline for reform of the outdated Computer Misuse Act 1990 to allow the industry to flourish, and ensure the UK is protected against growing cyber threats.
